about
I wrote the song on January 6th, 2021; the day of the insurrection. It was written quickly, processing in real time the violence happening at the capitol due to alternative news sources on the rise since the 2016 Presidential election. The song speaks to my general anxiety surrounding misinformation, how it has real life consequences, and how it can disconnect you from even the closest of family members.
My parents and I disagree politically. They are staunch Fox News supporters, and throughout the pandemic it was especially trying on our relationship. Many phone call conversations from 2020 and 2021 between my mother and I would devolve into a screaming fight. The song speaks to underlying grief in feeling so disconnected in world view to someone you love. In the current political polarization, it’s a dynamic that many Americans will only continue to deal with.
lyrics
It was said with such conviction that I almost thought it real
They said it'd be a landslide so it could only be a steal
In my bed so peaceful lies a burden I can't shake
Every day I awake in the morning treading water
Out there all among us are some people out of reach
Facts are now opinions of a truth we want to see
In their eyes they see me as a pawn that's being played
Every day I awake in the morning treading water
Ain't that river deep and wide
Treading water through the lies
I can't keep my cool to keep an open mind
A mother and her daughter haven't said a single word
Each wearing different lenses when they're looking at the world
Every night they argue for which one is more afraid
Every day I awake in the morning treading water
Ain't that river deep and wide
Treading water through the lies
I can't keep my cool to keep an open mind
Doing my best to keep my head above the tide
True colors show in the darkness of the night
It's getting harder and harder to recognize the people I once knew
Oh dear mother, is that really you?
Storming of the castle and it's anybody's game
We might get back to normal but it won't ever feel the same In this hour of darkness it's so much more than I can take
Every day I awake in the morning treading water
Every day I awake in the morning treading water
Every day I awake in the morning treading water
